boe-bot as sumo bot

Has anyone attempted to use a boe-bot in a sumo bot competition? A local robotics group I am in wants to have a sumo bot competition. I am considering doing it, but using my boe-bot instead of spending an additional $200 just to get a sumo bot. Any suggestions, advice, info? Thanks. I am most concerned about adapting the hardware. The controller is the same, and can easily be reprogrammed.......lol :)

I don't think the BOE-Bot meets the size requirements of any of the 'legal' sumo-bot competitions, so that would be a show-stopper right there.

I'm not sure about the comparative power of the servo-driven wheels, either, but not having competed I can't say more than that.

Based on my own limited experience...

From my understanding of the BB chassis, I don't think there is any reasonable mod that would get it inside the mini sumo limit (has to fit in a 10x10cm footprint at the start of each round) and it wouldn't be competitive in the Japan class (3kg mass limit).

Servos are fine for locomotion, though. I'd seriously consider building a custom chassis for the mini class. I may get into that myself very soon wink.gif.

Just for reference: My son and I have a very recently acquired parallax sumo bot each (from the competition kit). After one week of frantic hacking, we took them to PDXBOT.07 last weekend. Both bots performed respectably despite lack of tuning, and one actually won the beginner class (with, I should say, the help of a good deal of luck). Clearly, though, the advanced class is a totally different story - from what I saw it wouldn't be possible to get remotely competitive in such a competition without a custom built chassis at the very least.

A custom frame sounds like a fun project. I will have to see a real sumo bot up close to get a better idea on how to make one.

Feel free to download "Advanced Robotics with the SumoBot" - even though it was written for the Competition Kit·which comes with·two SumoBot robots, the wrestling strategies and sensor management techniques might be useful to you whether or not you put your BS2 on a custom chassis.· Be aware that the serial Board of Education is 10.8 cm long and the USB version is 10.2 cm·(hence the unique board for the SumoBot (and Toddler) robots.)

    The book is here:
