Why won't editor software recognize Stamp? different problem.

I'm sure somewhere on this form this is talked about but in my searches I can't find anything.

I'm using my stamp last night and all is well I uploaded a program. and then made a few changes and tried again and it won't recognize my stamp.
the stamp editor says NO on loop back and echo. I double checked to make sure that I didn't unplug the cable at either end. and still nothing. I thought it was a glitch with my com port so I rebooted my PC and still the same issue. I know it's not the stamp. the program that I have on the stamp sends debug messages so I know the stamp is doing that part of it. I thought that maybe it was the carrier board, and tried to connect a how brew stamp and the problem is the same. My current though is that my cable is bad. but it's wierd that it went bad so suddenly. I don't even think I touched it when the problem started happening.

thanks for your help

    Dgwaner -

Check the battery or power supply first.

using the 2 stamps I tried 3 different power supplies. 2 batteries and 1 wall wart.... the stamp is getting power and running the program that is on it... and sending the PC messages to the debug window. it won't upload. and as I understand the loop back should read with out power.

If the editor is saying that there's no loopback and no echo, then the problem is in the cable or the PC. If you look at the schematics for the Stamp boards, you'll see that pins 6 and 7 of the DB9 connector are connected together. The editor checks for this (loopback). Also, on the Stamp itself, the serial input is connected to the serial output effectively so that anything sent to the Stamp is echoed back to the PC and the editor checks for that as well ... the Stamp doesn't have to work for that to happen ... it doesn't even have to have power applied since it just uses the input (serial I/O) voltage to produce the serial output.

It could be the DB9 socket on the Stamp board. You could check the solder connections there.

If the Stamp can successfully send messages to the PC, then it's either the loopback connection (between pins 6 and 7) or the input to the Stamp from the PC isn't getting through.

That is correct…You should get loop back if connected to one of our development boards with a standard straight through serial cable. If you’re not getting that there is definitely some sort of connection problem. I didn’t see where you mentioned if this is a straight serial connection or if you have a USB to Serial Adapter?

Ok well I'm buying a new cable at lunch, that kinda what I thought was the problem just wanted to double check before buying a new cable. Pretty sure that it's not the db9 Socket. As each stamp uses a different socket and they both have the same problem.

Thanks for your help and time I'll let you know.

    Straight through DB9 serial cable.

    I had·a similar problem today.

I took·my Boe-Bot apart to install the Gripper kit and when I put it back together the editor didn't recognize the Basic Stamp. The problem·was the same whether I used the USB converter or a direct connection to the serial port.·In both cases when I tried to identify the port or run a program, the Loopback and Echo both read Yes for the COM port I was·using, but I got the "No BASIC Stamps found" message when I tried to run a program.

Any ideas on what I need to do to remedy this situation?

    Thanks,

Check your power supply. If you get Loopback and Echo, the problem is likely that the Stamp is not powered or is defective (unlikely). The Stamp has to be operational to be found.

I figured out my problem as well, bought the new cable and same problem. so I got my wife off her computer long enough to try it with the original cable and all was well.... double checked the BIOS settings and the port is enabled so as you suggested Mike it's either the db9 connector on the computer side has a loose connection or the serial port is fried. I don't want to mess with my main board so bottom line... time to buy the USB-serial adapter.

    thanks for all the help.

I've just purchased a·Board of Education (USB Connector) package which includes the BS2 RevJ chip.· It states that a 9v 300mA power supply is recommended.· I have tried a 9v battery, and can't seem to get any "Device Type" to show up when I try to use the Identity button with Basic Stamp Editor.· The Loopback and Echo both reply a "Yes", but no device type shows up.· I tried reinstalling the FTDI usb drivers, no luck.· I tried using a different computer with the same battery and usb cable and get the same result.· The chip is installed correctly and i'm using a brand new battery.· I'm running out of ideas.. unfortunatly i lost my bill for the stamp package if it is in fact bad, i can't return it :(
The only option I have left I think is to try a different usb cable or power.· I have a power supply that is 9v 600mA.· I see that a 9v 300mA P/S is recommended for the stamp.. Can I use the 9v 600mA p/s to try and see if that will show up in the Device Type when i click the Identity button?· Also, i use the serial ports on the computers for other things, so i know they are enabled and working in the bios.· The BOE board is switched to position SW0.
    Any Idea's???

As stated earlier, loopback and echo indicate that the serial connection is intact, but says nothing about the Stamp itself. Both loopback and echo will work if there's no power to the Stamp. They only require a working USB to serial adapter which is on this BOE. Most of the time this situation occurs when there's an inadequate power supply. Either use a fresh battery or an AC adapter. A 600mA 9V wall wart will work. The 600mA just indicates the maximum available current. The BOE without "stuff" plugged into it only draws maybe 50mA.

The power switch has 3 positions. The first position is OFF. The second and third positions provide power to the Stamp. The third position also provides power to the "servo" connectors which can also be used for some sensors.

I've had problems with my serial port being used for other things, mainly, my serial plotter. To fix this, I go to Control Panel/Printers right click on any icon and click properties/ then the port tab. If anything is listed under COM1 (my serial port), my basic stamp won't link correctly. Also my plotter and stamp have different port settings, so check those as well. Baud, polarity, etc.

    Maybe that helps at all?
