Loading Sprites from SD

I spent a little time doing some timing tests to see if I could read .wav data fast enough from the SD to incorporate large samples into my code. (On the level of several mins) and I have some serious doubts that it can be done based on speed.
However, has anyone considered loading the "word" entries for things like sprites from SD files? Perhaps some memory can be saved in this matter for game programing. Has anyone done anything like this yet?
