Protoboard Question

I just picked up the proto board, got everything wired up, and working with 9v power supply. However I noticed that the 5v regulator gets really hot. I plan on putting this in a small jiffy box and was wondering if it was ok to let it run for extended periods of time without damaging the regulator?

It's not that the regulator would be damaged. It will shut itself down before that happens and that will shut down the whole thing. You'd be better off reducing the power supply voltage to perhaps 7.5V or 6V. You could put two to four diodes (like 1N4001) in series with the power supply and they would drop the 9V to perhaps 6.2 to 7.6V which would reduce the heat load substantially. The diodes will get warm, but the regulator won't get as hot.
