PINK Netburner suddenly stopped working

Today I unpacked my PINK Netburner board and started playing around with it.

It was working fine and suddenly stopped working. It could be a coincidence, but it stopped working immediately after I tried doing an HTTP_POST (from a Director Shockwave app I was running off the PINK module).

I'm no longer able to connect to the PINK's various built-in htm files, ftp it, or connect to the html file I uploaded to it.

When I go to use the setup utility I can detect the module. I try to set it to use DHCP (by having all the settings be 0). If I search for the module immediately after "setting" it, it shows up with a green icon and displays the IP address I would expect. But search for it again, it shows up with a red icon and says it is DHCP'd at 0.0.0.0.

Any ideas how to fix this? Is there any way to reset the board (the documentation doesn't specify any).

Thanks for any help.

    Hello,

How is the board being powered? How do you have it connected? Are you able to talk to it from the BASIC Stamp Module?

I'm powering it via a DC adapter (I saw the postings which mentioned that battery power isn't enough)...

I don't seem to be able to write & read variables from the BASIC stamp board anymore... it was working earlier (once I figured out to change the baud rate on hte PINK's "Serial Data Port Settings" page.

Also, now I'm not being able to detect the PINK module at all via the setup utility. The LEDs on the module's ethernet port are blinking.

Is there a way to reset the PINK module?

You may still be lucky with it working as I also thought that my Pink had been damaged but somehow the baud rate had changed to default settings and on checking the page and altering the rate back it started working again, so i'd suggest rechecking the settings page. This is the parallax settings page not the ip setup program.

The problem is that I can't access the page now...

can you remember the original working IP address as this could still be valid.

Yes, I still have it and it's not working... I don't think this is simply a case of the Serial port data settings being wrong, I think there's something more serious (per the symptoms when trying to use the setup utility).

Are you able to look at your routers maintenance page at attached devices and see if the IP address has changed.

You said you’re powering it from a DC Wall Adapter…Is this a direct connection? Have you measured the voltage going into the module? Most wall adapters are unregulated meaning the input voltage could be too high for the PINK Module.

Well, I'm powering the BASIC stamp using the adapter and then connecting & powering the PINK module (per the documentation) via the BOE development board... so it should be receiving 5v regulated voltage via the VDD pin. Incidentally, I did double-check the adapter's output with a multimeter (having burnt out chips in the past by trusting the adapter's label).

I’m wondering if there’s an issue with the power supply in terms of current (or lack thereof)…What rating is the adapter for current? It should be at least 300mA.

It's rated at 300mA... it's an adjustable adapter. I have it set at 4.5v, but according to my multimeter it's putting out 8.3v. Of course, it could be that my multimeter is wrong (all the adapters I check with it do seem to be running at a higher voltage than they should). As a test case, I checked the voltage coming out of VDD and my multimeter has it at 6.25v.

If it’s going into the BOE then the output voltage should be set to 6V or higher. Without that you could be experiencing sagging in the supply which could be causing your problems.

Ok, I'll try the adapter set higher (and cross my fingers that my multimeter is wrong about how high the voltage is).

Ok, I've tried now with the adapter set at 6v and no luck (though I didn't burn out the BASIC stamp, so that's good). The board isn't showing up in the IPSetup... it was originally but over time it showed up less and less frequently upon pressing the "detect" button.

I don't know if this is significant, but the LEDs on the PINK's ethernet plug are just blinking. A few moments ago they went solid for a few minutes when I unplugged and replugged the board into the wireless router... but they're back to blinky behavior.

I noticed the documentation on Netburner's SB70 (which PINK is built upon?) said something about the IPSetup not working via a router. But since it had been working earlier, I assume that isn't relevant (also, it isn't clear to me how I'd have both the board & the PC on the same subnet--or whatever--without using a router... but then, I'm not an IT guy so I don't really know).

Well, if you have a Router then presumably your router is assigning local intranet addresses to all connected devices. These would typically be in the range 192.168.x.x and the subnet mask would always be 255.255.255.0 for these. That seems irrelevant at this point. Contact me directly at Tech Support tomorrow and I will see what we can do. Try to have your invoice handy for the information on it. Take care.
