Hi EveryOne

This is a Project that i have been working on for about two months now and its about 80% done now
I have Card Readers up and running and thought that i would post it now

What i have done is that i want to have a Card Reader as you come in to the yard·and one·Card Reader as you leave

The·reason i built this that the· cost of the remotes are $39.00 dollars each· where as the cards are $ 2.25 each·from
Parallax and give them to the people that i was to come in my yard

I want to THANK Chirs for all of his help in this project and All that helped·in this Post
http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=641588

Here is the code for this Project and some photo of the project

To hook up the Card Readers to the Basic Stamp··I used Cat 5 Cable
To hook up Gate Opener to the Basic Stamp··I used some CMA type T6 Cable
I am using the power supply on the Gate Opener to charge the batterys

I am using PVC piping for all cables that go in the ground

The Card Reader are Powered by one 6 volt 7 amphr battery·for each Card·Reader and the two battery are wired in
(+·· one battery· To - on the other battery ) to make 12 volts
So· Gate Opener·battery ·charger ·can charge both batterys
The Gate Opener can have two batterys in the case
I· hope that some else· that is thinking of doing the same thing this will give you some·· idea.gif

hop.gif.........We are so happy that this up and running............jumpin.gif

Thanks Chris for all of your help......................smile.gif

    ·

    UpDate

·There was changed made·from IDX VAR Byte to IDX VAR Word because·the byte index was not big enough for ALL·the Tags that·I want to use·

So the updated·code routine is posted below

    Sam, Neat project!

How close does the card need to be to your receiver?

The card has to be·ON the cover of the box·· like in the photo to work because the way i had to mount the card reader·but very well and i am going

to add a Basic Stamp in the house to see·who at the gate and to be able to open the gate at house·I am working on how to write the code to do this

now so may be awhile before i have all of it work out but·i will let all you know when i have it up and running

Here is the link to where i am working on how to do this part of the project

    ·····························
····························· Today was not a good day for the

    Basic Stamp It got Zap by a Lighting Strom· cry.gif· cry.gif· cry.gif

·······························that was at my house today

·( It was not a direct hit This has not given one bit of trouble until today)

I knew something was not right when·I went to get the mail after the storm

One of the card readers the green led was· ON·so I try the other to see if it was
working it was not I power down the Basic Stamp and the Card Readers

Then power all of it back up again and try both card reader but only one was
working so power back down and changed just the Basic Stamp Chip only

Then powered everything back up and everything was working again smile.gif·smile.gif·smile.gif

One thing that·I notice was the Basic Stamp Chip was very warm

It has to be one of the set of pins that when to the card reader

It is hard to protect any kind of complex electronic equipment from power line surges, let alone nearby lightning strikes with their huge induced voltages and currents. Lots of things help like shielding, bypassing any kind of signal or power line that leaves the box, optoisolators. None are absolute protection, but all help.

How would you use a optoisolators on the card reader pins that go to the Basic Stamp

I used cat5 cable from the Card Reader to the Basic Stamp

Would you do it like power comming to a· I/O pin on the Basic Stamp

    This is very true

Lightning damage is by far the hardest to thing to protect electronics from. I do electrical work for water well sites an I have seen first hand what lightning can do. I have seen it blow up breakers and melt lightning rods. Opto-isolators on any digital pins along with MOVs on power supplies and serial pins works but the real problem is the long cable runs. The lightning will induce a charge on any long cable run, sometimes the charge can be more than a MOV or an Opto can take. Shielded cable sould always be used on and outdoor electronic project. I have had good results using Tray Cable. Tray cable is AC/DC 300 volt sunlight resistant and can be used underground without conduit and is avalable in shielded and un-shielded. Look up Northern Arizona Wind And Sun, they have a large selection under the electrical parts section.

Northern is a great place to get parts for any solar project too. I forgot only ground the cable shield on one end otherwise it will create a ground loop.
