CAD Software

Hi Everyone,

Do any of you use CAD programs to make drawings/files to help design things or so that you can cut parts or have them milled. If so what programs do you use and what file format is best for that sort of work. dxf seems to be a standard.

Thanks,

I use Autocad to design parts for robots it's very cumbersome to make 3d modles though. For 3d projects I use Sketchup. its free from google. it's a really easy program to master and makes it quick to design parts or complete robots. it also exports to DXF which can then be translated into Gerber format or othere cnc formats.

    (of Google Sketchup)

I double checked and the free version does do DXF.

    file>export>2d Graphic
select DXF in the EXPORT TYPE drop down box.

http://forums.parallaxinc.com/sdp-si.com/eStore/ has free downloads of 3d parts perfect for robot designing. I'm working on getting a bunch of common parts, servos, batteries, wheels, etc. in Sketchup so I don't have to draw every part next time I want to design a robot.

Take a look I'd be interested in trading components.

I use Autodesk Inventor, it blows Solid Works out of the water (sorry Mr. Richard, but it's just a hellva lot better). Easier to use to.

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code

People say that if you play Microsoft CD's backwards, you hear satanic things, but that's nothing, because if you play them forwards, they install Windows.

I spent a minute looking at my own code by accident. I was thinking "What the heck is this guy doing?"
