Hello,
· What is required to have the PIR operate with the BS2 from·60' to 80'·?
Amplifier ?
Size and type wire ?
Or is it even practical ?
Thanks,
RC

What is required? A pir that will trigger at 60' to 80'. It's not the stamp that can't do it it's the pir. If you find one let us all know, please.

I'm sorry, what I meant was:
·· Several PIR's will be connected to the BS2 and the farthest PIR sensor will be 60 t0 80 feet from the BS2.
I know that the range of the PIR sensor is only up to 20' in the BEST of conditions.
Seems like a long way to push 5v.
    Yes.... that looks better.
I'll be more careful next time,
    Thanks Stephen,

    I have a portion of a roll of CAT5 comm./data cable.

Can someone give me an idea of how far from the BS2 I can expect to use a PIR sensor with this cable without the need of anymore hardware ?

I know you said "without any extra hardware," but in case that doesn't work out....

Have you considered using radio transmitters for that distance? You could use an SX chip with a radio transmitter to send a signal to the BS2 when the PIR spots something.

I'm doing something similar to this for Halloween props, but I built a mini wireless network. Each of the props can talk to one and other to update movement status and all. I have several PIRs along with PING sensors which all relay their data to a BS2 that has a receiver.

Thats the answer to what would have been my second question.
I still wonder what the max. distance would be with wire.
Third question: What have you found to be the effective range with the radio tx. ?
    Thanks Dan,

    Dan -

I'd love to see an overview of your props system if you're of a mind to share it.

    TIA

    Regards,

The listed distance for the transmitters and receivers are 300ft. They interface pretty easily with the SX and BS-2 chips. Really, it's just a single wire serial interface. Of course, you have a power, ground, and short length of wire for the antenna. My antenna is a 13" piece of wire. You can buy cheap antennas for the 433Mhz range and they run $3 to $9 for the nice ones.

Since Parallax sells similar type devices, I don't want to write anything that would take business away from them. They·sell transmitter and receivers which I assume work terrifically, as do their other items. If you would like specific information regarding the parts I used, please e-mail me.
    ·
I'd be more than happy to post the code I have along with pictures of the devices. I'll put them under the finished projects part of the Forum and post a link here for you.
    ·
I have personally tested the transmitters and receivers out to 60FT with no problem at all. I've also tested them inside the house at distances of 40FT, through walls and all. The only problem I found was not to put it on a glass table with wine bottles around. The signal started to scramble. I'm sure you could improve any of these distances by using an encoder chip or writing a Manchester encoding algorithm.·

Although I used a mix of BS-2 and SX chips, you can use either one exclusively without any problem.

Bruce, I truely intend to post all of the projects I'm working on. I'm just a little slow·making it happen. People here have been so nice when I run into problems, that I'd love to contribute by posting what I have built. I've run across problems I know people must have solved in the past, but I'll be darn if I can find information about them. So, I want to post my solutions in the hope someone else can benefit from the information.

I'll post a solution using radio transmitters and receivers along with a PIR sensor since this is what the original question was. I'll also post other solutions as soon as I have time. If you have a specific question, feel free to e-mail me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
