How Fast Can a Basic Stamp See a 0 To 5 Volt...... 5 To 0 Volts Pules

Hi EveryOne
I call Tech support and they said that the pulse was very fast (they are Dry
Contacts on a Relay)· 0 To 5 Volt......5 To 0 Volts Pules· they said that i
might need a scope to see open an close of the relay
Now on there Gate Opener they use a Mirco Controler so i think i might be
able to use this on a Basic Stamp
I would some who is a·very Good with a Basic·Stamp to help with this
Before i buy one of the units
http://www.jtgateoperators.com/system_accessories.html#wands
·GTO PRO 50' Exit Wand w/
Sensitivity Adjustment Board
The exit wand is an electromagnetic sensor that detects metal mass in
motion providing a 12 foot radius of detection that allows hands free
exit from automatic gate openers.
The sensitivity of the wand is adjustable for individual requirements.

I assume you’re referring to Tech Support of the Relay manufacturer? If the BASIC Stamp is controlling the relay then wouldn’t you just need to confirm latch opening? What pulse are they referring to?

Parallax Tech Support
I assume the wand would hold the relay closed for the time the metal object is moving. This could be a few seconds or more with a slow moving metal object.
With those assumptions in mind.
My guess is you would be better off polling an input pin. I would set up two pins. I would use a capacitor and diode to hold the incoming pulse and simply poll the pin every second or so allowing the stamp to do other things if necessary. The second pin would be used to discharge the capacitor after reading the high signal and wait for a low steady signal before jumping back to the loop to read the wand again. Use resistors to limit the current through the discharge pin.

Think Inside the box first and if that doesn't work..
Re-arrange what's inside the box then...
Think outside the BOX!
Thank You for your reply This will help me alot

This is·basicly what tech support was talking about
The wand would hold the relay closed for the time the metal object is moving.
But what they said was that it would not held·ON for very long
I would set up two pins.· How would i do this part
·I would use a capacitor and diode to hold the incoming pulse
I only need to read this pin when the card reader has readed a card
and simply poll the pin every second or so allowing the stamp to do other things if necessary.
·Could you give example of how to wire this· to the Basic Stamp
And would i have to use a Basic Stamp pe for this project
·The second pin would be used to discharge the capacitor after reading the high signal and wait for a low steady signal before jumping back to the loop to read the wand again. Use resistors to limit the current through the discharge pin

Thank You for your reply and help in this project

Yes i am referring to Relay manufacturer·I am sorry that·I did not make that clear
What pulse are they referring to?
I assume what they are taking about is that because the relay dose not stay
close for very long that why they referred to as a pulse

Hmmm that's a new twist. Where does the card reader come in and what signals does it output?
Is there a card you put in to open the gate? So now I am confused. ( I get that way allot though)

What i was referring was this Project.
I want to add this to the Project that i am working On

I do not mean to confuse you
I just have too many thing going on at one time
When you Scan·a Card on the Card Reader ·the One Going Out of the Yard
·That once the car gose pass the Exit Wand·then close the gate·
Or after so many loop around the routine to see if car has pass the Exit Wand· then close the gate
But i will have to wait until i get the Exit Wand· before i can try to· write this part of the code for that part of it
Could you give example of how to wire this·to the Basic Stamp
And would i have to use a Basic Stamp pe for this project

From inside:
Put card in reader1
gate opens
car passes wand
gate closes automatically
From outside
put card in reader2
car passes wand
gate closes
Question. One wand or 2? If going from inside to outside and wand is inside then a delay before closing gate. That could be problematic though if a car stopped within the gate area. If it is a big gate you may need a few pairs of safety IR detectors to make sure nothing is in the gate path. Perhaps 2 wands would be better.
Some thoughts.
Even with two wands, automatically closing the gate without some kind of safety input sensors may not be wise as you could be down the block and not see a dog get caught in the center of the gate while it is closing. Perhaps a sensor outside that makes sure the car is still there while automatically closing would be wise. True if you just leave without stopping until the gate is closed it would still be open when you came back. Sensors on the gate that measure current could be used to see if some obstruction is preventing the gate from moving could be used.

Ok I see now.
From inside:
Put card in reader1...........Going· Out.......
gate opens
car passes wand
gate closes automatically ...............Yes.... and watch the to make sure
that it closed before driving off
From outside
put card in reader2..........Gate Open Only
car passes wand..............No wand on the coming into the Yard
gate closes with the remote or card reader
Question. One wand......Yes only one wand
·Some thoughts:.......
·I would do that if did not work the way that i am talking about
Sensors on the gate that measure current could be used to see if some obstruction is preventing the gate from moving could be used.
This is on the gate opener already
The gate opener has this if it hit something it stops and back up for two seconds and stops
