Using the SX48 timers to generate PWM audio compared to a DAC ?

Has anyone used the SX48 timers to generate PWM audio ?
I could use an 8-bit DAC, or use the timers.
The SX48 would run at 20MHz giving 78125Hz PWM update rate (8-bits).
I know I'll need a filter, but will the quality be similar to the DAC ?
The audio will be 22K samples per second.
