Newbie with hypothetical question!

Greetings all,

I am extremely new to robotics and have just finished the first few baby steps with my BOE-bot today...loving it so far! (I am actually a web coder for my regular job so its not entirely a stretch for me heh)

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible or has seen anyone take like a super 8mm camcorder lens apparatus and apply it or its components to a robot or specifically a BASICII stamp bot? For instance, instead of a small webcam lens, cannabalizing a 8mm lens or mic from an old camera to relay visual data? There seems to be a lot of goodies on these cameras that could be used, but i dont know how feasible this is haha

Can someone give me an idea of how difficult this would be (if even possible)?

I'm sure cannabalizing the parts of an 8mm camera lens/sensor/mic will be difficult because of the size and the way these things are designed to not be repaired. Theoretically, the lens motor is something that a Stamp could control. The microphone and sensor are something else. A Stamp is simply not capable of doing the processing needed to process audio input or video of any kind. The Propeller can handle audio input and output and video output, but is very limited in its ability to process video input without significant external hardware. A number of people have built robots with video and audio, but these simply feed the normal output of the camera (or camcorder) into a audio/video transmitter for viewing on a TV receiver with a receiver adapter.

I've had good luck using one of these type cameras. The camera runs on a simple 9v battery and can transmit both audio and video cleanly about 50-200feet depending on conditions. It's neat to do "telepresence". Many times you can find these cameras cheaper (in the $25/$30 range) if you hunt around a bit.
