5mhz cystal vs Xtal1

I've ordered some EEPROMS from Microchip, so I'm gearing up to play with the idea of making my own memory cards/slot for my propeller setup. Since I'm using Protoboards, I'm not sure I can integrate that into the plan without modification of the board itself, so I'm thinking of building board #3 from the ground up on a breadboard. Looking at the Hydra specs, I see they used an XTAL1 vs the 5Mhz Crystal on the prop boards. Could someone share the advantages or disadvantages of this. Increases of speed, or loss of compatibility?
Thanks
