Can compass work on Boe Bot?

Hi,

··· I am building an application·based on Boe bot. I wish to use the Hitachi HM55B Compass Module provided by Parallax to·measure the·Boe bot's heading. My question is whether the mangetic field of Boe Bot's Servo·will interfer·the compass readings? By the documents of the compass, the compass can not work near motors. I am not sure how strong is the mangetic field·produced byt the Servo.

Regards
Wangwei··

The compass can work on the BOE-BOT. It is affected by the magnetic fields of the servos. There's a calibration process described in detail in the documentation for the compass that attempts to compensate for this. There is a bracket designed for the PING sensor that can also mount the compass about 6cm above the servos which should help somewhat.

You might consider that a compass is generally a magnet and will be attracted to any ferrous object - iron, steel, nickel, etc.

If you have the BoeBot with compass in a room full of iron chair legs, it might become confused. And if you have a steel cased battery [like most AAs] very close to it, that may throw measurements off.

So, try to mount it where it will work well and measure how it responds in a normal environment before you let it go in the 'real world'.

My friend thought that I had a compass on my robot. I explained that it actually was a burried pipe detector.
