I'm really new at this.· I'm planning on buying a new laptop and I need to know if the Serial connector supplied with the basic stamp will plug into a SATA II port.· Thanks !

No, it will not. SATA is a very high speed serial connection used for connecting storage devices like hard drives or DVD or CD drives. The serial connector on the Stamp is a "low speed" asynchronous serial connection. You will probably need what is known as a "USB to serial" adapter that plugs into a USB port. Not all USB to serial adapters will work with the Stamp (many don't properly implement some of the signals). I've used Keyspan's High Speed Serial Adapter and Parallax sells adapters from FTDI that also work well.

I use a Sweex USB to Serial in combination with the Boebot and that works fine
