·Hello i am trying to make a tachometer for a school project but i am not sure what i need to make it.
I have looked at the different sensors and the Melexis hall effect sensor seems to be the one for the job.
However i am not sure if i will need to use a plate magnet for the sensor because the description said that the sensor is
to be used with the magnet. If i use the magnet do i have to glue it the the revolving surface? if anybody knows what i should do i
would appreciate your help.

You need to pass a magnet in front of the hall sensor or conversly pass a sprocket (or other toothed device in front of the hall sensor with a magnet attached to the sensor. If you look at the documentation there are examples.

You could also use a infared device like the the QTI line detector kit or the digital encoder kit from parallax or the single line detector from lynxmotion to make an optical encoder.
