Are there any RSS feeds for this site?

If not, could you make some?

RSS feeds are becoming a standard staple on most sites. We're still waiting for that version 3.0 release of the forum software, but it's been a while since we have received any news on that front. Our options are to start implementing these features (RSS, listServe and others) with the existing source code or replace the forum software with something that meets the demand for new features.

Is there any news on the RSS front? I'd love to use it to keep track of any new posts; the email notification would be a little spam-like on a busy day.

Without changing or updating the forum software, it should be possible to add an RSS aggregator as a separate program that "scrapes" the forum pages for new posts and incorporates them into a news feed.

Unfortunately my scraping skills are somewhat lacking. It would be nice to have this feature though. How could this be implemented?

I meant that for Parallax. Rather than waiting for updated or new forum software, this feature could be incorporated into their web domain as a separate service that scrapes their own forum pages. But now that you mention it, you could do it on your own with a background Perl script on your own computer. There are plenty of Perl modules available on www.cpan.org to do the heavy lifting for you.

    Phil,

But that would cut into my precious robot-programming time. I'm already one of the world's slowest programmers, adding another project would only make it worse! I've tried writing something like this before and it didn't pan out so well. Mind you, this was a few years ago. I can't make any promises, but I'll have a go at it from work, at least it'll look very work-like to my colleagues, with all the Perl code. Just so everyone knows, this is not me committing to writing an RSS feeder, mmkay? Chances are good I will get frustrated/bored with it and it'll end up in the 'Projects' directory together with the other programs that never quite made it.

I will first scout around to see if there is a BBnet RSS thingy on Freshmeat or something, you never know.

I've been spending quite a bit of time on SocietyOfRobots.com forums... one thing I love is that you can easily see all new posts since your last visit... I wish this site had the same feature (or does it and I just don't know about it?)!

It does, it's called View Active Threads and is in the Forum Information area below. Be prepared to wait a very long time for it.
