building r/c sumo bot, need desperate help

Hi everyone, I've been searching around on the internet for a while now and seem to be just getting more confused by the minute. I have recently been informed that I need to build a sumo bot for my school's scioly team in the next month. it can be R/C, so no micro controller is needed, but i just wondered if someone could get me a push in the right direction. I read the article on how to build an r/c robot, but I am having trouble finding all the parts online, and my main worry is that the parts I buy won't be compatible together. anyways, the robot has to be able to fit in a .5 meter cube and run on 18 volts or less. can anyone give me a list of parts or something that I should start off with? Thanks so much in advance, I really appreciate it. I'm desperate here.

-James

This is a support forum for Parallax products. If you were building a sumo-bot with a Parallax microcontroller we could help you, but you're not. You're just going to have to search the internet for information on R/C controllers and robot parts. There are lots of sites to look at. You're probably going to want to use continuous rotation servos for the wheel drive motors because they'll work directly with most R/C receivers.

I think you should first decide what you want your BOT to do. Do you want a ready-made chassis? Have a look at the sumo-bot documentation here on Parallax's website. Theirs uses one of their microprocessors, but it is a sumo-bot and you may be able to get some ideas from it. It does use two servos.

alright, cool. i thought the general robotics forum would be ok, my bad.

Edit: how would i get the servos to continuously rotate?

go to a sumo site for the rules and to find parts sources. I'd use a couple of Saturn winshield wiper motors and a 12 v car battery for weight.
several of the surplus parts sites should have what you want and the hobby shop should have radio control.

    James,
Continuous rotation servos are modified standard servos. You can do it yourself (there are instructions on the web) or buy them already modified. Basically, the position feedback mechanism in the servo is disabled and the pulse width specifies the speed and direction of the rotation rather than the absolute position.

These are the rules for "sumo" robots. If you don't follow these all bets are off. But if it only has to fit in an 18" box I'd use starter motors, 8" wheels and automobile batteries. It would be awsome.

    What is the weight limit?
