Propeller Beanies?

It's been discussed before but I'm curious what the latest thoughts are...· Is Parallax considering making Propeller Beanies available?· I think more than a few of us would love to see and purchase them.

    Tim,

Ask Chip about that via PM. It comes up all the time. Or, post this in the Prop forum and see what happens.

I think the marketing and sales side of the office likes the idea, but maybe the engineers find the idea a bit corny.

A "propeller beanie" corny ??? You've got to be kidding me...

Of course it's corny, that's the whole point !

At shows you should give away Propeller chips and beanies, with the agreement that the person MUST wear the beanie at the show to get the free propeller chip. When you see someone with a beanie, you know they are interested in the propeller chip.

Or else give away the beanies early, then later go around and anyone you "catch" wearing a beanie, gets a free propeller chip.

    Bean.

Thanks guys. Yeah it is a bit corny, but I have to agree with Bean that that's part of the point. I invision a 'high end' beanie that has so much class that it out-weighs the corny factor. Very well made with only top-notch materials and a design that's ready for modifications... I'd be willing to pay a premium for that. Maybe stitched hole designs that happen to match the common LED sizes with wiring races sewn in behind them. Pockets for Propellers and batteries to sequence said LED's and such. A pocket in the top center for the pancake motor to spin the propeller? All sorts of ideas that we could come up with!

    Tim,
I can see that too. The beanie would "look" for other beanies, and spin the propeller when one got close enough to detect (IR).

But I can also see a cheap throw-away beanie to give away. Maybe just paper(good paper), with a plastic propeller.

It would show the other uC companies, that Parallax is in it for the fun, and for the hobbist.

But then again, I flunked Marketing 101 ;)

    Bean,

Great ideas and important to show the fun side, I agree. I think your ideas are sound too but I've never taken marketing at all! My apologies for earlier, I was just lost in the ultimate beanie I guess.

Now we just need one of these shows somewhere in the "mid west" in stead of the West Coast...

Parallax has been in Chicago at McCormick Place for a show. It might have been the Sensors Show about 2 years ago when I last saw them.

Then they stopped coming due to some project involving a propeller using up all their time.

It must have been designing that ultimate propeller beanie that has kept them away.

I just realized that perhaps "Bean" has a vested interest in a Propeller "BEAN"ie. Is he expecting some sort of royalty payment for each one? Maybe if he was paid two bits per beanie or a 3 bytes per dozen beanies, he would be satisfied.

Might I suggest a solar powered Propeller on the Beany.

Props are easily purchase via R/C suppliers, small motor are everywhere. So, I really suspect the distinctive portion is to be the 'hat'. Something akin to Jughead's in Archie comics might have genuine nerd appeal.

These hats [or Mortar Boards with Propellers] could be awarded to any faculty that provides a curriculum that uses the Propeller in their school. The students would enjoy seeing the teacher look so foolish, but it is all in good fun.

And of course, they would be collector items.

Now despite the outstanding genius that visits this forum, I can't help but to chuckle a the thought of anyone being overly fashion conscious.

Not that a beanie would not be a lot fun for those who dare wear one, and I would love to have one on my desk, I still think I would prefer a beany t-shirt. XL please.

I wonder if I would still get a free chip?

    -J

BTW: is it beany or beanie?

Atlanta, farther east? It's at the same longitude as parts of Ohio. Farther east starts at Philadelphia. smile.gif

No, no, no, silly. If you're luggage makes it with you, you get to continue through the gates, if not, you have to sort that out first.

I hate to say it......but man do I hate Atlanta....always traffic...and always a traffic jam.

But I would admit...if Parallax came to Atlanta for some reason...I would go....even if I did have to grit my teeth.

    John,

    LOL

Would be nice if they did a show out here on the east coast every now and again.

It was the character of the place, I enjoy people watching, and there's certainly a high "character to normal" ratio in that locale. No doubt there are nicer places in Hotlanta, but the most "interesting" people all seemed to congregate at 5-points. Mind you I was only ever there as a visitor on short sojourns from FL, Id certainly never live in 5-points.

It's the same reason I like South Beach, would never live there but its a fun place to visit.

    Paul,

Sometimes it's just better to nod your head and grin.yeah.gif

Now if you were to wear a Propeller Beanie at 5-points and "people watch" (<--My wife and I do that to...., people watch that is) that would be a different story!smilewinkgrin.gif

Actually, a debut in Atlanta would offer the beanie as a functional cooling device. In Florida, it might cause a mini-twister.

I stll stand by my suggestion that the actual beanie should be a solar powered device. A micro controlled option would be the super deluxe, maybe added power and IR remote climate control. Maybe an interface can be provided for the super deluxe to be optional and the add ons would permit hackers to provide creative spin.

If one were to add a tail rotor and R/C or IR remote control, you might actually get it to fly. After all, Buckminster Fuller demonstrated that half-domes are aero-dynamically stable due to their symetry.

Many moons ago, I used to live in Little 5 Points and have to agree with all of the previous comments on the place...and I don't think beanies would even raise an eyebrow there.

For those of you not acquainted with the place, it appeared to me while I was living there, that vast chunks of it got stuck somewhere around 1966. On the street, one is likely to meet traditional "hippies" wearing tie-dye t-shirts, faded jeans, throwing a two finger peace-sign and slowly drawling "we ain't mad with nobody." Lots of "antique" (junk) stores. The best part for me was the Little 5-Points Pub...kinda dark, groups arguing the existence of God, single guitar-playing beatnik type singing folk ballads... It even had a co-op grocery store at which people volunteered to work without getting paid...except for the occasional organically-grown butternut squash...

    Thanks for the trip...
