In case it is of any general interest, here's the solution of my FTDI query.
1. The FTDI schematic has documentation for j1, 1 to 4 and j2 1 to 4
The device has pins 1-8. They map as shown

Also the port installed as COM8: this was shown in the Windows device manager. I had my VB only scanning up to 6.
