What robots inspire you?
Hi guys,
This is an informal poll. What robots inspire you? What robots bore you?
Mad Tight Robots (cool);
Battle Angel: www.geocities.com/bjaccobs3/035.html
Gutsy robot girl. Kinda reminds me of myself.
Bicentennial Man: www.imdb.com/title/tt0182789/
Funny, cuddly, too cool.
Robots That Sux (uncool);
Data from Star Trek, new generation.
Come on, would any girl go out with him? Where's the personality?
That big black monster from "Lost in Space". "Danger, Will Robinson!" Yeah, yeah, whatever.
I, Robot (from the movie);
Can you say creepy?
O.K. give it up, what's cool and whats not.

The NASA Martian Rovers
Various Underwater ROVs
Sensor robots used to explore and monitor volcanoes and other hazardous locations
They may not be pretty to look at, but they are "real" and "similar" robots with some of these capabilities can be modeled by any of us. Heck, the BOE Bot is just a mineature, stripped down version of the Mars Rovers. Add a couple sensors, and you're on your way. In terms of inspiration, these robots give us attainable goals to shoot for, not in the literal sense, but in terms of making a robot that can do something.
I guess what I mean is, it's not likely that many of us will build a robot that will rove on Mars, but building a robot that can "explore" and take some sensor readigs (Ping, temperature, etc.) is certainly in the realm of possibility.
Then again, there's this young lady floating around. She's working on designing a mobile platform for a disabled friend. That's inspiring too.

I'm a former automation technician, what inspires me, most people never get to see. I worked on/built·machines that welded, and marked parts with lasers. I have worked with robotic arms that move faster than your vision could perceive them, all the while being more precise than belief. I·worked with·vision inspection systems that could see things that a person could never see, and be 100 times faster than a human doing the same job. The automation world is a very "neat" field to work, if you get the chance.
I think science fiction does motivate a lot of people, it helps our projects and goals evolve, but most people here will never see the complexity of the "robots" mentioned. The cost would be way beyond what our wallets would allow. But on the same token, I have seen some neat projects here too. Like the "head" that was recently shown with all the sensors.....really cool.
Agfa,
relax man......people "create" at their own pace. It was a simple off topic poll.
It is important what motivates you, tells something about your character.
That is my answer......

DATA was my hero !!!

Problems are the "roads" of life,
solutions are only "onramps" to the next problem

I also have always had a thing for Huey, Dewey, and Lewey from the Seventies Classic "Silent Running" starring Bruce Dern.
the Asimov robot with the long view over history was in the foundation and empire series and was called "R. Daneel Olivaw"
The series introduced the 0'th law of robotics·- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics
Bit of triva for a Monday afternoon!

Staying on topic - it has to be the mars rovers. This is a very good (detailed) link:

This simply means doing things that haven't been done or aren't commonly done. Pushing the limits could mean creating new mechanical parts, using new programming tehcniques, using new electronics, using new sensors etc.
Oh ya, my coffee brewer is one of my favorites :)

Magic Smoke Theory of Electronics –
Inside every electronic part there is magic smoke.
The magic smoke is what makes everything work.
If you release the magic smoke, the part stops working!
