Best way to attach a motor to a pulley?

Hi guys,

How do I attach a motor to a pulley?

I am thinking, just put the belt around the motor drive shaft and put the other end of the belt around the pulley. The pulley is attached to another shaft by a set screw. This shaft is connected to a ball bearing with a set screw. This same shaft is also has 2 shaft collars that have set screws. Squashed between the shaft collars is a bicycle tire. This is the best I could come up with. It seems pretty flimsy to me. Any better ideas?

Direct drive with a overamperage protection circuit seems the easiest, but, again I have no idea how to connect the wheel to the gearmotor drive shaft.

I am using the Parallax HB-25 controller and this 12 VDC 212 in-lb gearmotor:

Thanks,
Lilly.

    latigerlilly,

I would think, that a chain-drive would be better suited for this type of application. It would certainly introduce less friction and reduce any slippage that might occur if a belt drive were used. A local bicycle repair shop should have, or know of a source for a sprocket that would fit to the motor if it's not a standard shaft diameter.

Beau, according to her other post she is using a pully system to allow for slippage in case the wheel stalls it won't stall the motor.
latigerlilly, look into a device called a 'pillow block. they would support the shaft on both sides of the wheel giving it the support you need.

Robot Marketplace carries pillow blocks and all sorts of shaft bearings/couplings. If memory serves, that's where you purchased the motors? You might also try contacting them and see if they have suggestions/parts for mounting the kind of drive pulley you want on the to the shaft of the motor.

Typically, you attach a pully which has the right inside diameter on the shaft of the motor. Typically, the pully has a 'lock screw' to lock it to the shaft.
