Amplifier problems

I have a LM386N amplifier circuit that I need to switch on and off from my stamp.
At first, I just switched the 12v supply rail on and off with a transistor.
However, the noise the amp makes as it turns on is pretty terrible (especially as it now feeds a larger amp).· I have added 1k resistors across the 0.1uF output capacitors on pins 2 and 3 and this has helped a little.
I also put a 22uF capacitor from ground to pin 7. This also helped.

Any ideas how to either dampen the switch on noise or to control the amp?·
My only other idea is to leave the amp on constantly and break the audio feed with a reed relay driven from the stamp, but that seems a bit brutal.

Thanks
Steve

I'm also in the middle of a large BS2 project which uses two LM386N amplifier circuits. This project is mostly quiet and hopefully will last 20 years. So, I would also like to "turn off" the LM386N amplifier circuits when they are not being used by the BS2/EMIC.

Hopefully, somone from Parallax can give us some ideas, if other replies are not offered.
