The SX28AC datasheet v1.6 on page 41 specifies a max Vdd of 5.5v.

If the power supply is close but questionable, a 5.1v or 5.5v zener diode placed right after it would shunt any high points to ground...

I have used a 7806 6V regulator on the SX28DP and it seems to survive quite well.

I have also used 4 AA batteries directly on a SX20SS without any regulator and it also survives well.

Of course it is not advisable but sometimes you need to do it.

For example, by not using a regulator, the SX20 can go into sleep mode and drain only a few microamps.
If a regulator is installed, more than a thousand microamps would be drained for nothing.

Another reason to use 6v directly on the SX is when I need to drive a Mosfet's gate like the IRF530 which needs 6V, without the cost of a mosfet driver.
