Anyone else ever tried to interface with the MOS 6581 (Commodore 64 SID chip)?

I'm trying to hook my BS2 up to the C64's SID chip. I'm using a 555 timer for the clock input and writing data directly to the A and D lines. However, it doesn't appear that anything is happening. I am a little unsure about my wiring as far as power and GND are concerned. I'm hooking the BS2s 5v out directly the 5v in on the 6581, and the GND pin to the ground on the Stamp and ground on my 12v power supply. I just get a hum and the power supply gets really hot. Has anyone ever attempted to interface with one of these with the the Stamp? If so, do you have any pointers or wiring diagrams? Thanks
