Bits into Bytes

I'm making a program that will translate the data from a parallax RFID reader in an array of bytes. This is my first program, so can somebody tell me if I'm on the right track? I need to make sure this is the best way to do it (And that it works, I don't get my replacement chip until next week) so I can use it as a reference. I won't ask you to proofread my work anymore.
