74HC595 and lcd screen.

Can the 74HC595 be used to drive the Hitachi LCD screen (the one that comes with the stampworks kit)? Or, do I need to get a serial LCD screen?
If it can be done, do you know where I can find a sample circuit and code?

You'll find a circuit to drive the parallel LCD in 4-bit mode (7 wires total) here www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=603-00006

and they work real well with most character based LCD's which are Hitachi HD-44780 compatible.
