How to compress MOV file from digital camera ?

I got a digital camera for xmas that will record video (with sound).
But the files are huge, something like 1meg a second.
On my PC they play using Quicktime.
How can I compress these to put them on the web ?
I don't mind paying for an inexpensive program to do it, but free would be much better ;)

Bean.

Upgrade to QuickTime Pro from Apple - $29.99 www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/

or if you had a Mac I'd suggest iMovie and iDVD

Hi Bean, this is freeware. I have never tried this software but the site itself is a mine of information. If you dont get enough compression with this at least with AVI you can import into Windows Movie maker which gives a fairly decent output for web video. I guess you know that FAT limits your recording time and that if you require longer video clips you need to convert to NTFS.

One suggestion, you may want to check out Sorenson Squeeze to export as FLV or SWF. It isn't too expensive, and is a great program, it will capture DV from cam or open QT files, then compresses based on your settings.

Flash movies are great for web, very small, excellent quality, universal playability, my experience is that for file size, the quality is unbeatable versus a great compression on QT

    Thanks for the sugggestions guys.
I think I'll try converting the MOV to an AVI, then I can pull it into my "Pinnacle Studio 8". I'm familiar with that, and I make whatever I need from there.

    Bean,

I have been in your same shoes with our new digital camera, and I have done exactly what you describe above... do a Google search for mov2avi and you should find something "Freeware" that works.

Hi Bean, I knew my camera also took video clips and after reading your original post was curious as to what format my video would be. It turns out that it is mov so I downloaded the mov2avi and converted a short mov clip I shot this morning. Without doing anything with the mov2avi software apart from selecting the mov file and a couple of different codecs I produced two successful clips sound and all. So (assuming you have sound in the original mov file) I would guess that the problem either lies in the codec you selected or the record settings of your audio card. As a note the first codec I tried was Huffyuv v2.1.1 which is a free download, the link should be on videohelp.com somewhere.
