Stepper Novice

Hello All
I am new to electronics and the basic stamp (total novice here). I am trying to operate a four phase 12v stepper motor (p/n 27964) with my BOE / BS2 (Boe Bot). ·Because the motor requires 12v, do I need a separate power source for the motor? I am guessing that I do. Specifically what I have so far is the four phase leads connected directly to BOE pins 4 – 7 and don’t know what to do with the common lead. Am I close??

There is an excellent tutorial on using steppers in the Stampworks, downloadable from this site. You can damage your Stamp by hooking the stepper directly to the Stamp pins. I would read the tutorial before continuing.
