DC Motors and Encoders

Hello everyone!

I'm having trouble finding any suppliers of hobbyist DC motors with shaft encoders. Does anyone have any links or know of suppliers that carry small DC motors with encoders pre-attached?
I'm specifically looking for 12V motors with RPM < 500.

Thanks!

If this is for robotic use, the shaft encoder would normally be in the wheel, and not on the motor,or are you speaking here of a stepper motor? What is your specific application?

A shaft encoder mounted directly on an ordinary PM DC motor would be nearly like a tachometer, albeit reduced by the gearing.

I have seen in Activmedia Amigobots a dc motor with an optical shaft encoder. These encoders are similar to the ones at US Digital, which are attached to the backend of the motor. I am building a robotic system with motors that drive strings, and I need to know how fast the motors are moving so I can figure out the speed of the string. I cannot use standard servos because I need to be able to adjust speed.

    Thanks!

This is a bit pricey but a really nice rig:

If you are using a Stamp that includes I2CIN and I2COUT (like the BS2p) or an SX or a Propeller, you're basically ready to go right out of the box.
