Is my serial LCD a dud?

Hi guys,
Recently I bought some stuff from Parallax, including a 27977 backlit serial 2 x 16 LCD. To use initially on my Professional Development Board and later in my current project.
Anyhow, I finally got around to hooking it up this afternoon. But I just can't get it to work. To test it I hooked up +5v from VDD bus on the prof dev board and GND from the VSS. I set the DIP switches to OFF,OFF for TEST mode, powered it up and the backlight came on. I then tried adjusting the contrast but no text displays on the LCD.
I even tried a simple test program, but that didn't work either.
Can I try anything else? Or is my LCD dead?
