Serial cable? I'm lost !!

I have had a BS1 Rev D starter kit for some time. It came with a parallel cable on one end and the other end goes to the 3 pin terminal on the board. Always programmed in DOS. I have downloaded the windows software and the information I am reading is that I MUST have the adapter to program the stamp in windows. This adapter is for a serial cable. Looking at a starter kit I see that now you get a serial cable??? Have they changed? I have ordered a new Basic stamp 1 REV D. I have also ordere an adapter but it will be useless with my present cable. Do I have to order a serialm cable also to use windows??
