serialy driving two steppers

I am serialy driving two steppers with a BSP and 2 Little Stepper-Us with a 14.8V, 5Amp, Li battery. Two questions:
1. What is a practical distance (ergo, 50 ft) for the serial line from the Stamp to the Little Stepper? If a driver is needed, suggestions appreciated.
2. Can I use the 14V to power the 5V logic of the BSP and Little stepper using a diode, 5v regulator and good filtering?
Circuitry seems simple but I might be missing something important.
