This isn't answering your question directly, but was curious if you've seen Jon the Great's (aka Jon Williams) code on the efx-tek web? There's also a related N&V column that occured last year that's on the Parallax site. It's called "Tricks and Treats with LED's" (Col #126).
Granted it's in PBASIC, but shouldn't be a an issue to convert.
He also uses a buffer to source more current on the LED's.
The·Nuts and Volts article on Haloween available from the Parallax website is very good. The code is easly ported to an SX, good experience too if youre just starting out. Also have a look at this link
