spider gait

In what order does a real spider move its legs?· The movement itself seems to be only two sequences.· Each leg can ob viously be mirrored left to right.· It can also be mirrored front to back.· Sort of a temporal mirror.· So one would only need to map out two legs.· But what order?

A spider's gait is actually very complicated depending on how many DOF you have for each leg. your best solution would be to video tape a spider, then record the movements on paper.

Based on my personal observations (I love watching "bugs"), it also depends on the species of spider, and what kind of surface they are on, etc. Some spiders tend to use the front legs as "feelers" and really walk on six legs. Some spiders move sideways, others tend not to.

When doing a "roboth", remember that three points determine a plane, and ideally, for the most stability only three legs (two on one side, one on the other) will be on the ground at any one time. If you try and use less, you are likely to tip, if you use more, you'll have the wobbly table syndrome.

I have a CrustCrawler NOMAD on the way, and will be doing some serious research myself on this, albiet for six legged critters. I was hoping to catch video of a few different critters walking on glass, but I think most of the outdoor guys have gone to bed for the winter around here (Wisconsin).

I've got to beleive that we can find some video "online" somewhere on this stuff.
