Whats with that shack...?

Has Radio Shack discontinued selling the BOE-Bot robotics kit? I purchased mine when it was on clearence sale last May for $99. I had to call around to a lot of stores ( Radio Shack ) to see which ones still carried the kit.

    They're clearing out a lot of hobby stuff. It's part of their new image.

    Apparently the only Parallax product RS still sells is the "What's a Microcontroller" kit, with a HomeWork board in it.

    That is really too bad. They are a hobby store and now they seem to be going in the direction of "cell phone mania" .

    They go where their CEO thinks the money is. Hopefully, a more enlightened CEO will come forth eventually, and use the money from cell phones and satellite TV to continue offering parts for us Gear-Heads.

    Not likely. There is a lot of store overhead that goes into selling a 37 cent resistor. How many of these "fringe" parts does a typical RS sell in this age of Internet sales and places like Digi-Key, Mouser, etc. While I miss the assortment of parts, etc. they used to have, it does not make economic sense anymore. The number of people getting involved in DIY electronics is declining, and/or finding other sources.

    How old is that RS ad?

    FYI, the only items RS still sells from that ad is the wirewrap tool, resistor assortment, capacitors and the mini amp speaker.

    I still use my Radio Shack folding DMM also - it's probably 22 years old and on it's 3rd set of batteries.
