gyroscope

Which solid state gyroscope is best for an autopilot type application?· I have so far seen two types.· One type monitors the position of a bubble of air.· The air bubble's position is dependant on what direction gravity happens to be pointing.· The other type involves capacitance changes between fixed plates and a moveable, center portion.· It seems that a system relying on gravity would potentially be fooled by centrifugal force.· I would expect that to be a detriment to an autopilot.

I think both of the devices you are refering to are accelerometers, those are not quite the same as gyroscopes. And the air bubble can be affected by centrifugal forces as well.

Gyroscopes and accellerometers are frequently combined to provide a full dataset of motion called an Intertial Measurement Unit (IMU). You can read up on them at www.sparkfun.com
