Hookup wires in the SX protoboards?

I have a working VGA circuit that uses SRAM. However, it stopped working and now displays solid bands of color all over the monitor and when I wave my hand over the hookup wires, the colors change.
I've seen this when using high-speed SRAM that wasn't properly grounded but every pin I am using either go to GND, PWR, or to a pin on the SX. So, I am thinking it is because of the distance from the SX Protoboard to my breadboard.
I am now thinking I probably should solder everything I need to the holes in the protoboard so that any wires I use shrink from 6" down to 1" or less. BUT, I'm not the best at soldering and would hate to damage my SRAM.
What do you guys recommend? Maybe I should get a small breadboard and connect it to the protoboard??
Thanks
