OZONE Generators

Well it started with one cat then two, I bought a nice ozone generator for the litterbox area and it worked great. The bulb of course now needs to be replaced because there is not much ozone being generated. Now a stray cat showed up last year, it had 2 babies, the mom is now relagated to the outside but the two babies, well that makes four cats. Sure I enjoy playing with them but still, the house is ageing and I am thinking whole house OZONE treatments like they do to clean smelly cars.
I have done some searching on making ozone generators and there is alot of information on how to build them. I was wondering if anyone here has built one. I was taking apart an old CRT monitor last night and looking up specs on various parts (just for for fun) I was looking at the high voltage coils and CAPS thinking these parts could be used to generate some OZONE.
I will be searching for a good design today but any experianced ozone makers tips would be great.
Some thoughts...
I know where I can get some neon transformers for free...
I am thinking break the outside bulb of a murcury vapor bulb enclose it in a metal box with a fan...

You're going to laugh when you see how easy it is. Take a GS-40 (intermediate base) lamp and put it in series with an ordinary 40 watt light bulb. Plug it into 120 VAC, and you're all set! The 40 watt lamp bulb acts as the ballast and starting resistor combined

The UV type will not produce enough ozone to kill mold and bacteria, the source of the odors. True it can make the air fresher and eliminate odors but the source is still there.
Home made ARC type high voltage generators can produce HIGH LEVELS OF NITROGEN OXIDES

I will have to try the suggestion you made I think for a local litterbox type unit but I have decided instead of making a whole house unit I will order the Air Duct 2000 unit from these folks later today. After reading about the nitrogen oxides problem with ARC type generators, i am not sure how this company eliminates that problem, I read the problem is generated by H2O humidity in the air. Drying the air before converting to ozone solves the problem, I also see in their page on the dangerious model that too much air is being forced through the unit is a cause, this seems to me they would use heat and lower velocity of air across the corona to eliminate the nitogen oxides as a byproduct.
If anyone has any bad experience or good to share with this company please post.

I guess you DID! Where did I say anything about an HID lamp?
You'll get about ZERO ozone from anything but a germicidal lamp. The GS-40 lamp I mentioned is a germicidal lamp. The trick I offered will ONLY work with that particular lamp and NONE OTHER.

The plan was to break the outside glass bulb away from the mercury vapor lamp inside, that allows the UV light to react with the O2 atoms and create the ozone.
I think I will just put the lamp back in the box unless I try one of the high voltage starter circuits I found searching for ballasts.

I did however back in high school break the glass thermometers (accidently... like alot of other kids that thought a big bottle of mercury would be fun to play with) and collect the mercury to play with during the day, that was not a good thing to do at the time and I do realize that now.

Interestingly, Mung Beans apparently remove heavy metals from your body. This is an everyday Chinese bean that can be bought cheaply and the skin is the part that does so. It is also a refrigerant and will promptly cool you off in 100 degree weather. Here in Taiwan, they sell in as a sugared soup for cooling off in hot weather.
I also wonder if the ozone might bleach things in high enough concentrations. In America, water purification has switched over to ozone from chlorine as there appears to be some concern that the chlorine causes cancer. So, I suppose ozone is bad, but it may damage things that you don't want to have bleached.

Take great care when trying to build almost any OZONE generater since a lot of designs out there are very risky and you run the chance of a fire. I have heard of more than a few sites pulling their designs due to people reporting fires or having close calls. Also... OZONE for the most part is really nasty stuff that is harmful to humans, plants and animal and anything more than tiny amounts for an extended amount of time. Don't get me wrong OZONE will get the job done... But at what cost in the long run?
I would say you should look into active carbon can filters :) It is like the stuff used for fisk tanks and they sell filters you hook fans upto and it cleans the air better than OZONE without the risks :)
