A few good keypads for projects

· Hello all,

·· I've got a few keypads left over from a project ( only about 12 - 15, actually). I thought some forumteers might
find them useful.

·· They have 16 keys, (0-9, *, #, plus F1, F2, F3, F4 ). They are membrane type switches with nice tactile feel.

·· There are also 4 LEDS built right into the keypad ( one red and three green, I believe )

·· The keypad is made for industrial service and is dust/water tight when applied
to a clean surface. The back has 3M Hi Performance peel-and-stick applied.

·· A flat, printed-circuit ribbon cable about 8" long brings out all connections. It is standard 4 row-4 column matrix arrangement for the
keys and the remaining·5 connections are for the LEDS; Anode common. The mating connector (not included) is a
standard card edge connector cut down to 13 pins. Usually, a shim made of light cardboard or circuit board material
is used in the connector to ensure good contact.

·· A clear window lets·4 x 20 LCD display in the underlying panel or box be seen.

    Hi keyboard test pilots!

    When these were in production, we used a 26 or 50 point card edge connector. They're designed to work with 0.064" thick circuit boards with the contacts etched in the board. Spacing is 0.100".

    Because the keypad cable is only 13 contacts wide, we would trim the 50 point units down with a hacksaw.

    Note that when you're buying the connector, the number of contacts includes BOTH sides. That is, a connector sold as having 26 contacts usually has 13 per side; just check the physical dimensions if you're not sure.

    Having said all that, digi-key C1EXT-2636M-ND gives you the connector complete with 36" multi-coloured pigtail. Or, the MCF26K-ND specifies the contact spacing at 0.100".

    In use, the width (where the circuit board would normally go in) of the connector lets the ribbon cable slip in with zero-force. Then, a backing of card-board or thin fibre is slid in the back side of of the ribbon cable to make the contact secure. Actually a couple of layers of credit card material is about right!

    I had them custom made in Montreal quite a few years ago. Probably you can get the same thing done now for quite a bit cheaper.
