    If you can use an external serial RAM instead, then you won't have problems with "wear out". The DS1307 is an I2C serial real time clock with 56 bytes of RAM that can use an external battery for backup and maintaining the clock. There are plenty of examples of its use in Parallax's books, magazine articles, etc.
