CNC Manual pulse generator

Has any one built a pulse generator for manual control of a cnc machine? I have an encoder that im using for the control but im confused about how to switch its direction automatically.

Dr evil I think some details info would be helpful to answer this.

What Stamp?
What is your driver?
Micro stepping, half, etc?
How many axis'
Not sure what you mean by automatically switch direction, that needs some clarification
