Use a LM317 or LM350 as the regulator an a by-pass transistor [or possibly a 10 amp power mosFET].

If you don't have to go all the way to zero [about = 1.2volt bottom], an adjustible regulator control will easily cover most of the range in one package. The trick is to configure it to control another device to handle the higher amps.

Adding one 2N3055 to increase the output would be a very simple addition, but seems to be rated at ony 5 amps.

Try National Semiconductor's LM317 andLM350 pdf for typical schematics.
There is one that uses 3 LM350s and an opamp to produce 10amps of output.
The only problems is where do you buy the 3amp adjustible regulators? I can never find them.
