HM55B Compass

I am having an issue with my HM55B Compass. The compass + bs2p combo worked great for me a couple weeks ago, but now I cannot seem to get a valid ready message when I ask the device to report a measure. I keep getting a result of 1111, and the documentation says that a result of xx11 is "/EN did not receive low-high-low signal between start and report commands". I have verified that there is a low-high-low signal between the start and report commands. I am using the sample code (same pins) that came with the device.

Can anyone offer any advice? Is there some reason why I might not be getting a valid ready result. Is there some test or check that I can perform to verify that the device is still good?
