An exchange of chips...
I love Maxim ... their sample system is awesome... The one down side is most everything I could use at this time (due to the lack of ability at soldering) is DIP componets.
Recently I asked for samples of their 2 wire 16 port i/o expander, and as anticipated, they shipped 4 of them, all of which are either ssop or tssop format, too small for me to work with.· I'm willing to exchange all 4 chips for an equal amount of ports (4 chips * 16 ports = 64 ports) on what ever number of chips... all must be DIP format...· You pay shipping to me, I'll pay shipping back...

I hopped on out to Microchip's site and requested samples of the chip...
With some waiting, I should have them here soon!
... I don't know what I'm going to do with the MAX's if I do get the samples from microchip...

Just gone without any comment or explanation.
I do understand that it is somewhat of a burden and certainly if you are just giving the stuff away as free samples it is more so. But I really don't see how the next generation of electronic engineers is going to have any hands-on skills and pragmatic knowledge of the physical construction of these things.
Also, the 0.1" breadboard is a creative standard. It allows us the freedom to quickly try something that is poorly understood or wildly innovative.
In other words, allow people to play with the products.

I'd like to use the schmartboards, the biggest issue I have is trying to fingure out WHICH of the bleepin formats... ssop, tssop. soic, tsoip.. then there's the spacing...
Maybe someone could tell me what are the 'magic' number on the spec sheets that tell me which form factor it is...

I would say that, if you don't work at some huge electronics manufacturing company, then just say student, or researcher or something. Whatever is closest to reality.
Companies like Maxim, Microchip, TI, etc, make money off of massive, large sales of their chips (think many, many thousands). I'm sure they have special departments set up, with budgets, just to send out samples, and they probably send out lots of sample orders every day.
They hope that some small percentage of those will someday generate a massive, large sale of something, but I'm sure they are aware that lots of those sample orders are from hobbyists like us. More than likely, the biggest cost to them is the shipping and handling, not that of the chips.
All said and done, it may be better for everyone if you just order samples from the manufacturer, rather than placing an order for 1 or 2 chips from someplace like Mouser or Digi-Key.
