General question on IC's

I am using a L293 motor driver. If I have the IC's logic supply power hooked up to my BS2's +5v, can I use my javelin's I/O pin to control the motor driver? The grounds are connected. I ask this question because I'd like to use my BS2 to turn the motors on and off (I don't want to waste the javelin's pins for that), but I'd like to use the javelin's PWM VP to control their speeds.
