Detecting Underground Dogfence

would a magnet finder work for this? i googled how they work and basically it sends out a simple sine magnetic wave maybe two, and when the color gets close it shocks the dog, will one of parallaxes magnetic detecters possibly be able to locate this and make the robot,car move away?
