TCS230 Color Sensor help connect directly to the sensor board

I have the evaluation kit and have connected it and used the demo program successfully.
Now, I'm trying to setup the N&V column "Color Me Tickled" #98. which requires a direct connection.
I'm not able to follow the drawings well and the documentation shows 2 VDD's and no VSS, so I'm a bit lost.
There are only 5 connections to be made from the ribbon cable to the app mod, so any help would be appreciated with a basic drawing.· With the cost, I didn't want to experiment.
