Hello everyone. ·I am thinking of getting the tank tread conversion for the boebot. But I was wondering if it was possible to use the wheel encoders with the tank set up... Has anyone tried that yet??
·· THe wheel encoders are not compatible with the tank treads as they rely on the holes in the wheels and those aren't used on the Tank Treads.· I hope this helps.· Take care.

Tahnks I was thinking the same. But I was thinking would it be possible to creat segmented disk that could be placed on the inside of the gear connected to the servo. The disk could be painted black/white in 16 or 24 segments....
·· The problem is that the gear isn't big enough to do that.· The holes in the standard wheels are further away from the serco shaft than the gear will allow.· You might be able to figure something else out though.

Okay thanks chris. I'll problebly order a set in a week or two, and see where it takes me. Still like the idea of tank treads. They may very well finf them self on a different bot than·I'd like. I'll try to keep everyone posted on the progress.
I've never been a big fan of using encoders unless you're trying to track distance. If all you are concerned with is accurately keeping a heading (going in a straight line for example) then a compass module would probably work just fine. Parallax sells them on their website, and I picked up a nice I2C version from: www.mindsensors.com.
