Has anyone combined TV Terminal, Keyboard, and an RS-232 driver for a full dupl

I am just getting into this a one of my several Propeller bench tools.
Instead of running RS-232 through my PC, I want an autonomous terminal.
I have the hardware ready [a Propeller Demo Board and a Max232 interface], I just need suggestions about filtering keycodes on the output side and handling cursor and visible character on the input side.
I suppose it would be ideal to mimic some generic video terminal standard, but I don't know which one {VT-100, or whatever}?
I suppose that I may want to plug this into my old 56K baud modem at times and call a remote site to talk with another computer too.
Not too much format, just 25lines of 40 or 80 characters will do fine.
