Interface RFID Reader Module

I've been following an RFID Reader tutorial from Make Magazine vol. 06.

My end goal is to make an RFID Reader that can interface tag information for a PC, so tag information could automatically feed into a end-use program.

I'm not too familiar with the BASIC Stamp, and I could make the RFID Module using the serial TTL interface, but I'm not sure how I could convert that information. I'm guessing the easiest way would be to use an already existing software.

Help is so appreciated. I'll keep my updates posted. roll.gif

If you're already connecting the RFID Reader to a BASIC Stamp then the BASIC Stamp could send the information back to the PC.· Without the BASIC Stamp you simply need a line driver on the output of the RFID Reader to handle RS-232 levels and you would have to deal with the data on the PC side.

Do you know if Parallax is planning build or sell an RFID interface that has a longer read range?
Something on the order of 10 feet? Or possibly more? I have an application where I regularly install RFID systems and they are VERY pricy compared to the units I can purchase from Parallax, but I need a minium of 10 feet read range (vehicle ID).

I would really prefer to build my own RFID system (better control, and I can customize the 232 data), but I can't find the pieces economically, or I have to use proprietary software and a PC and write some convoluted programming to interfaceit to my Crestron systems.

It sounds like you need an active RFID System which is always going to be more expensive.· If you look around you might find some OEM type modules that are less expensive because they don't have a controller.· Take care.

You can build an antenna that can increase the range of passive RF reading. There are tutorials out there, I think.

Going back to the connecting to PC question, I figured the hardware would be the Stamp, but I wasn't sure about software.

Even if you could increase the range on one end, the tag still has to transmit the data back to the reader...It's output will still be limited.· I'm not sure that would work on our reader and would, of course, void the warranty.· But I guess the price is so good you could handle experimenting so...Take care.
